Poolside Tile Mug

MJ creates each piece by hand in her home studio in Amsterdam. Working in small batches allows her to stay closely involved with each stage of the process, from forming to finishing.

Using primarily the pottery wheel, she shapes and trims the clay, adding surface details such as carvings and handles before allowing each piece to dry. It is then fired in a kiln at 1000°C to become bisqueware. From there, each piece is glazed by hand, often using painting techniques and glaze experiments that give every mug its own character and surface variation. A final firing at 1220°C transforms it into durable stoneware.

MJ’s process is intentionally slow, hands-on, and intuitive, allowing each piece to develop its own expression. Subtle variations and small imperfections are part of the making process, reflecting the human hand behind each object.  

Please note: There are minor pinhole imperfections in the surface of the glaze exterior of this piece, a result of the firing process and unique glaze interaction. This is cosmetic only and does not affect the functionality of the mug. The mug remains fully food safe.
