Midnight Current Trinket Dish

MJ created this piece by throwing the dish and pedestal separately on the pottery wheel. Once trimmed, the two components are joined by hand and allowed to dry slowly before an initial bisque firing at 1000°C.

The piece was then taken to a raku firing workshop at a farm just outside of Amsterdam and glazed onsite by hand. During the firing, it is heated in a raku kiln to approximately 1100°C. While still glowing hot, it is carefully removed from the kiln using metal tongs and exposed to the open air, causing the glaze surface to crack.

The piece is then placed into a metal container filled with sawdust and newspaper. As these materials combust, smoke and soot are drawn into the crackled glaze, darkening the surface and highlighting the intricate crackle patterns that make each raku piece unique.

Because this process is largely influenced by fire, smoke, and chance, this piece is uniquely one-of-a-kind.

This piece is created using the traditional Japanese raku firing technique and is intended for decorative use.

Due to its porous nature, it is not food safe and should not be used for serving food or drinks. Avoid prolonged contact with water and do not place in the dishwasher, microwave, or oven.

To clean, gently dust or wipe with a soft, dry cloth. Handle with care, as raku ceramics are more delicate than high-fired stoneware.
