Her story

MJM Ceramics is a handmade ceramics brand founded in 2024 by MJ Marquez, a Canadian ceramic artist based in Amsterdam. What began as a creative escape from her engineering career has grown into a ceramics practice that celebrates individuality and the charm of imperfection.

From her Amsterdam home studio, MJM Ceramics presents a selection of one-of-a-kind works alongside custom commissions for businesses, brands, and individuals. MJ creates beautiful, functional pieces, aiming to encourage people to connect with objects that reflect their personality and bring joy to everyday moments.

“I’m drawn to capturing feeling and personality through color and texture, with the hope that these pieces slowly become your favorites over time.”

Craftsmanship

MJ often begins each piece with loose sketches before forming them intuitively on the pottery wheel or by hand. The work is then trimmed, carved, and slowly dried before its first firing. The final stage consists of handglazing and a second firing, allowing time and care to guide every stage of the process. Small variations, marks, and imperfections naturally occur as part of the handmade creation process, but each piece is carefully assessed for quality and functionality. Creations that do not meet the standard are recycled or repurposed.

"Each piece is made to be lived with, whether it’s a textured cup you bring to your local café, a colourful ramen bowl that becomes your favorite for every meal, or a unique vase you gift to a friend."

Sustainability

Sustainability is considered through every stage of making. All creations are made from locally sourced, durable stoneware clay fired at high temperatures, ensuring functionality and longevity. Trimming and offcuts are reused, firing is done in full loads only, and water is reused during production. Moreover, packaging is kept minimal and fully recyclable, to limit environmental impact.

Collaborations

Over the past year, MJM Ceramics has had the opportunity to collaborate with brands in Amsterdam on custom ceramic work. This includes designing a functional matcha bowl for the plant-based bakery Margo’s, as well as creating 300 handmade mugs for Bob W’s apartment-style hotel in Amsterdam Noord.
