This photograph was taken on Bonaire, as part of a larger documentary project that later developed into a self-published zine.

Bonaire is a fascinating place, shaped by layers of beauty, dependency and contradiction. That tension is also present in this image: the faded glory of the building, set against the bright blue sky and the rich, saturated colours of the island. If you look closely, you can still see the fallen letter N from the word “fashion” lying on the ground.

The project explores the neocolonial relationship between the Netherlands and Bonaire, a so-called ‘special municipality’ of the Dutch state. A place once marked by extraction, exploitation and violence is now increasingly made dependent on tourism, imported goods and Dutch governance. Very little grows on the island. Almost everything in the supermarket is shipped in. Children are taught in Dutch. Dutch professionals are regularly flown in to share their “expertise”, often earning significantly more than the Bonaireans working alongside them.

When the local government resists or disagrees, the Netherlands can threaten to withdraw funding, placing Bonaire and the other special municipalities in an almost impossible position. Rather than building long-term resilience, autonomy and self-sufficiency, the current system often seems to deepen dependency.

This project tries to look beyond the postcard image of the Caribbean and to question what remains hidden behind its colours, landscapes and touristic imagination.

My photography often begins while travelling, walking or spending time in places that feel layered, quiet or slightly in between. I am drawn to landscapes, streets and everyday scenes where traces of memory, change and human presence are still visible.

Most of my work is made with analog photography techniques. Shooting on film slows down the process and gives the images a certain softness, texture and unpredictability. The act of photographing becomes part of the experience itself: observing, waiting, moving through a place and responding to what appears.

The locations vary from remote landscapes and small villages to urban edges, coastlines and places shaped by subcultures, history or transition. I am interested in how people live with their surroundings, and how a landscape can hold social, political and personal stories at the same time.

The people involved are often the people I meet along the way: residents, travellers, friends, strangers, or sometimes simply myself in relation to the place. Through these encounters, the photographs become small fragments of a larger story about attention, memory and being present.

The digital prints are made using high-quality matte printing, ensuring vibrant colors and fine details. Each piece is printed on premium, matte paper designed to preserve the details and depth of the images.
