Art&Sol creates fine art prints inspired by classical depictions of the female form. Using bold colors and hand-applied imitation gold leaf, the brand offers a modern and playful perspective to these traditional images.
Her story
Art&Sol is a Leiden-based artistic practice founded in 2023 by Sarah O’Leary. It began when Sarah revisited a collection of her old ink and watercolor paintings and started experimenting with them through graphic design. She then decided to sell her work at a market, and the brand grew quickly from there.
Sarah’s work celebrates the female (and occasionally feline) form. Rooted in classical depictions but given a modern twist and a thread of humour, her prints are warm, playful, and quietly subversive. Through her work, she hopes to remind her customers of the power of the female body, the joy of female friendship, and the universal truth that it’s a cat’s world — we’re all just living in it.
"Each of my designs was created in a moment when I needed to wind down and treat myself to a moment of peace. I hope each print can act as a treat and evoke a similar sense of peace for my customers."
Craftsmanship
Each Art&Sol print begins as an original ink and watercolor painting by Sarah, often inspired by sculpture, background figures in paintings, and classical imagery. These works are digitally reinterpreted through color and graphic experimentation before being printed in Amsterdam. Back in her studio, the selected pieces are finished by hand with imitation gold leaf, adding texture and a distinctive final layer to each composition. Her prints come in three standard sizes: A3 (Large), A4 (Medium), and A5 (Small), making it easier for customers to find a frame for their prints.
"I use a graphic design system to give my paintings different color schemes and apply interesting effects (the process involves a lot of hitting buttons until I find something I like)."
Sustainability
Art&Sol keeps sustainability in mind through small-scale production, producing prints in limited quantities based on customer demand to avoid overproduction. Whenever possible, Sarah collects prints directly from her Amsterdam printmaker by train rather than shipping them, while also reusing packaging materials for customer orders where possible.
